OVERVIEW

From 1st January 2017 the Second Engineer and Chief Engineer academic examinations will be combined to form Management Level III/2 academic examinations for each subject.

South Shields Marine School offers courses for seafaring marine engineers at Management Level III/2 to cover the following examinable academic subject areas:

  • Mathematics,
  • Engineering, Systems and Ship Drawing,
  • Electro Technology and
  • Naval Architecture.
  • Applied Mechanics
  • Applied Heat
  • Steam
DISTANCE LEARNING

South Shields Marine School is now offering exciting new options for the Management Level Academic courses via distance learning. With distance learning packages, you choose the time to learn; you choose when to start and decide how much time you would like to devote.

LEARNING PACKAGES

Each study package lists the topics you are about to study. This will give you something to aim at. What you will learn will depend on how well you study: the more you put in, the more rewarding it will be

All the information you are required to learn will be delivered to you in this learning package

ASSESSMENT

The current method of assessment is by external examination prepared by SQA on behalf of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.

Single subject certificates are issued for passes in the academic subjects and for a combination of professional subject passes

Upon passing the required assessment and an MCA Oral Examination* the candidate will be awarded the Certificate of Competency. Written examination papers are of three hours duration.

* Please note: All candidates must be in possession of an MCA Notice of Eligibility to apply for an oral examination only.

DATES & FEES

Planning your learning is a vital step towards you successfully completing your studies. Unlike conventional courses, distance learning is not tied to the academic terms. This means that you can start to study any time you wish. Students will be enrolling at any time in the year and will study at their own pace until they complete the course.

Fees for the academic year September 2024 to August 2025 are:

£495 per subject (excluding exam fee)
