OVERVIEW

From 1st January 2017 the Second Engineer and Chief Engineer academic examinations will be combined to form Management Level III/2 academic examinations for each subject.

South Shields Marine School offers courses for seafaring marine engineers at Management Level III/2 to cover the following examinable academic subject areas:

Term 1

  • Mathematics,
  • Engineering, Systems and Ship Drawing,
  • Electro Technology and
  • Naval Architecture.

Term 2

  • Applied Mechanics and
  • Applied Heat.
ON-CAMPUS LEARNING

South Shields Marine School offers courses for marine engineers wishing to prepare for the Management Level Academic exams. The courses  studied on campus are a blend of compulsory taught sessions and tutorials  with lecturer led teaching and learner led Q+A (latest exam questions provided).

You will be provided with the notes and knowledge to prepare you for the management level exams.

Have access to library books, IT services and MOODLE our student learning platform which contains our Management Level course notes, instructional videos.

There will also be more opportunity to study additional courses alongside/in-between example (Engineering Systems and Ships Drawings.

REMOTE LEARNING

South Shield Marine School is now offering exciting new options for the Management Level Academic courses via remote learning

This will consist of the entire course that is taught at South Shields Marine School being available to attend remotely simultaneously to those on campus.  Our experienced lecturing staff will be using wireless microphones in class along with sharing their computer screen,  Powerpoint presentations, and handwritten notes, as though you are in the class room.

Remote students will be able to interact with the lecturer as normal and ask any questions they may have via Microsoft Teams, and will receive our full support throughout the programme as they usually would on site with us at our campus.

The Online teaching will be run as pre-arranged lectures where students can use the chat function, to interact, post questions and comments

Students will be able to use Microsoft Teams to collaborate, post information or ask lecturers for assistance outside of lecture time

Have access to MOODLE our student learning platform which contains our Management Level course notes, and instructional videos

Attendance

To complete the course, you require 80% attendance, therefore Students are expected to attend all live teaching sessions where possible. Please take this into consideration when enrolling on this course as all lessons will be run UK time and you will be expected to attend the live sessions regardless of time difference.

Please note some courses may require additional progress monitoring through assessment to count towards attendance.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To study this course, you must have:

EITHER

EOOW (III/1) or equivalent Certificate of Competency

OR

Second Engineer (III/2) or equivalent Certificate of Competency

AND

The necessary sea service to apply for a Notice of Eligibility for either Second or Chief Engineer.

ASSESSMENT

The current method of assessment is by external examination prepared by SQA on behalf of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.

Single subject certificates are issued for passes in the academic subjects and for a combination of professional subject passes ie General/Motor and/or Steam.

Upon passing the required assessment and an MCA Oral Examination* the candidate will be awarded the Certificate of Competency. Written examination papers are of three hours duration.

* Please note: All candidates must be in possession of an MCA Notice of Eligibility to apply for an oral examination only.
