EITHER
EOOW (III/1) or equivalent Certificate of Competency
OR
Second Engineer (III/2) or equivalent Certificate of Competency
AND
The necessary sea service to apply for a Notice of Eligibility for either Second or Chief Engineer.

The current method of assessment is by external examination prepared by SQA on behalf of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency. Candidates must pass all elements of the Engineering Knowledge examinations and within three years also pass their MCA Oral Examination*. The candidate will then be awarded the Certificate of Competency. Written examination papers are of three hours duration. * Please note: All candidates must be in possession of an MCA Notice of Eligibility to apply for the oral examination only.
