South Shields Marine School offers courses for seafaring marine engineers at Management Level III/2 to cover the following examinable subject areas:
Professional Subjects:
The Seconds and Chief Engineer ‘Engineering Knowledge’ examinations are now combined to form one management level ‘Engineering Knowledge’ examination.
If you pass the management examination before obtaining your Second Engineer Certificate of Competency you will NOT need to repeat it to gain a Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency, only a pass in the Chief Engineer Oral Exam.
Programmed courses are arranged to cover the Professional Subjects (EK’s) of 6 weeks or 10 weeks duration.
South Shields Marine School offers courses for marine engineers wishing to prepare for the Management Level Engineering Knowledge exam. The course is studied on campus with a blend of Lecturer led teaching and learner led Q+A (latest exam questions provided).

You will be provided with the notes and knowledge to prepare you for the management level exams and orals.

Have access to library books, IT services and MOODLE our student learning platform which contains our Management Level course notes, industry guidance and instructional videos.
Our 10 week course includes more time in between lessons to absorb and revise material as well as a guaranteed 1 or 2 week revision period after the course and before the exams.
South Shield Marine School is now offering exciting and flexible new options the 10 week and 6 Week Engineering Knowledge (General and Motor Only) course via remote learning
This will consist of the entire course that is taught at South Shields Marine School being available to attend remotely. Our experienced lecturing staff will be using wireless microphones in class along with sharing their computer screen and Powerpoint presentations, in addition to a webcam being fixed at the white board for any handwritten notes, descriptions and diagrams our lecturers may wish to add to their sessions.
Remote students will be able to interact with the lecturer as normal and ask any questions they may have via Microsoft Teams, and will receive our full support throughout the programme as they usually would on site with us at our campus.

The Online teaching will be run as pre-arranged lectures where students can use the chat function, to interact, post questions and comments
Students will be able to use Microsoft Teams to collaborate, post information or ask lecturers for assistance outside of lecture time
Have access to MOODLE our student learning platform which contains our Management Level course notes, industry guidance and instructional videos
Attendance
To complete the course, you require 80% attendance, therefore Students are expected to attend all live teaching sessions where possible. Please take this into consideration when enrolling on this course as all lessons will be run UK time and you will be expected to attend the live sessions regardless of time difference.
South Shield Marine School is now offering exciting and flexible options the 10 week and 6 Week roll on and off programmes. This can be combined with our on campus or remote learning allowing you to study your way.
The Rolling Programme allows you to split the 10 week and 6 week courses into managable blocks which can work around you. (Minimum 2 week blocks).
NOTE
We recommend should you need to split the programme, you should ideally commence with Week 1 as this is an important foundation to the course.
The course is designed to be studied in order so opting for this rolling programme may disrupt your learning and continuity.

EITHER
EOOW (III/1) or equivalent Certificate of Competency
OR
Second Engineer (III/2) or equivalent Certificate of Competency
AND
The necessary sea service to apply for a Notice of Eligibility for either Second or Chief Engineer.

The current method of assessment is by external examination prepared by SQA on behalf of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency. Candidates must pass all elements of the Engineering Knowledge examinations and within three years also pass their MCA Oral Examination*.
The candidate will then be awarded the Certificate of Competency. Written examination papers are of three hours duration.
* Please note: All candidates must be in possession of an MCA Notice of Eligibility to apply for the oral examination only.
