The course will give learners the knowledge to recognise the dangers of enclosed spaces. The safety procedures to be adopted before entry, including a ‘permit to work’, safe testing of the atmosphere within the space prior to entry, and during any work process. How to make safe entry into a space, undertake a self-rescue using appropriate rescue equipment, and how to undertake any of the ‘safety’ roles attached to an enclosed space entry.

This course is not an STCW requirement and does not need approval by the MCA.

OVERVIEW

The aim of this 1 day Enclosed Space Course is to give those whose role involves work preparing for entry, or actual entry into Enclosed or Confined Spaces on board a vessel, regardless of whether employed within a professional seafaring role or otherwise, and gives training to meet the requirements set out in, The Merchant Shipping (Entry into Dangerous Spaces) Regulations 1988, (SI 1988 No1638), (the Regulations), IMO Resolution A864 (20) Recommendations for entering Enclosed Spaces aboard ships (adopted on 27 November 1997) and Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seamen (COSWP).

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
  • Fit to participate in all aspects of the training. In particular, the learner must be made aware of the practical aspects of the training and the physical nature of the exercises.
  • Able to successfully wear a self-rescue Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD).
  • Valid Passport for proof of identity. British citizens who do not have a valid passport may provide a UK Photo Driving Licence or a UK Government issued Photographic Identity Document
ASSESSMENT

During the course the learner will be continually assessed on all aspects of the practical training.

PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Please note that any STCW training does not provide direct employment opportunities within the Merchant Navy sector. The training provided on this course is to supplement your existing skills and experience and hence enable you to competently meet the safety requirements of entry into an enclosed space. You are advised to review the range of employment opportunities available for a match with your current skill set.
