South Shields Marine School offers the full range of Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) courses, designed to meet IALA and MCA standards (as applicable). The courses utilise state-of-the-art simulation technology, ensuring practical, hands-on learning in realistic scenarios, where applicable. Please see individual course page for more details.
VTS Operator (VTSO) Training
VTSO Training provides foundational knowledge and skills for individuals aiming to become certified VTS Operators. There are four VTS Operator training courses, candidates without a maritime background will require all four courses to qualify as a VTS Operator. Those with a maritime background maybe exempt from some of these courses, please see the individual course pages for further information.
VTS VHF Course
Focuses on communication coordination using VHF radio systems, ensuring effective maritime communication.
VTS Nautical Knowledge Course
Covers essential topics such as chartwork, collision regulations, and shipboard operations, providing a strong foundation in maritime navigation.
VTS Underpinning Knowledge (UPK) Course
Explores the legal framework, human factors, and emergency response, equipping trainees with critical theoretical knowledge.
VTS Simulation Course
Utilises state-of-the-art simulation technology to provide hands-on experience in managing real-life vessel traffic scenarios.
Further and Advanced Training
VTS Supervisor Training
Advanced training for experienced operators aspiring to supervisory roles, focusing on traffic management, emergency response, and administrative functions.
On-the-Job Training Instructor (OJTI) Course
Prepares participants to deliver effective on-the-job training for VTS personnel.
VTS Recurrent Training
Regularly refreshes the skills and knowledge of certified VTS personnel, focusing on traffic management, communication, and emergency response to ensure they remain current with best practices and regulations.
VTS Port/Area Specific Training
In collaboration with a VTS centre, we simulate your specific VTS area and design tailored exercises to facilitate effective training and assessment. These exercises can include both routine scenarios and emergency situations, customised to meet the client’s specifications.
