OVERVIEW

This 4 day course is part of the training exercises for Deck and Engineering Officers who wish to succeed and complete a Certificate of Competency and crew who are nominated to control firefighting procedures.

All aspects of firefighting measures at sea and in port will be covered on this course, with specific importance on organisation, strategies and current command including relationship with shore-based firefighters. The course will cover issues such as aeriation control, hazards involving dangerous goods and the effects of firefighting water on ship stability. Students are evaluated on their aptitude to successfully control firefighting processes. An assortment of practical exercises involving fighting fires of different types and intensity are included.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Learners who are undertaking this training:-

  • Must be aged 17 or over
  • Completed Fire Prevention and Firefighting, (Section A-VI/1-2 of the STCW Code) or similar training acceptable by the MCA.
  • Fit to participate in all aspects of the training. In particular, the learner must be made aware of the practical aspects of the training and the physically demanding nature of some of the exercises involving live fires and the use of breathing apparatus
  • Valid Passport for proof of identity. British citizens who do not have a valid passport may provide a UK photo driving licence or a UK Government issued photo identity document

 

ASSESSMENT

During the course the learner will be continually assessed on a number of topic such as:-

  • Theory of Combustion
  • Fire extinguishing,
  • Entry control procedures
  • Practical exercises
  • B.A Theory
  • Ship Board Fire Fighting
  • Command and Control
  • Fire Fighting Investigation
  • Fixed Fire Fighting insulation

Upon successful completion of the course, all learners are issued with an STCW Advanced Fire Fighting Certificate.

PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Please note that any STCW training does not provide direct employment opportunities within the Merchant Navy sector. The training provided on this course is to supplement your existing skills and experience and hence enable you to meet the safety requirements. You are advised to review the range of employment opportunities available for a match with your current skill set.

Please note: If you are not an EU passport holder, you will require a Student Visitor Visa to attend any course at Tyne Coast College.
