The proximity of the college to the Port of Tyne makes it the perfect choice for our VTS staff and Port of Tyne pilots regularly attend the ship simulator to practice emergency situations and undertake fog runs, which is a vital part of their training. The simulator has an excellent graphic representation of the Port of Tyne approaches and the river itself and provide realistic visuals, incorporating structures, new buildings and berths that had been constructed or altered. The renewable energy and offshore industry is expanding rapidly within the North Sea. This brings new challenges to the port industry with increased vessel sizes, many of which are specialised for handling large wind farm structures. To investigate the feasibility of bringing these into and out of the port, the simulator again provides a safe environment to test the options. It also enables the port to increase weather parameters to gauge the safe operable limits.
