“The marine school have supported Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) for a number of years now. They have facilitated Career Events to allow us to liaise with future potential candidates. Their Pre-Cadetship program has certainly been instrumental in the way these future cadets have been proactive in their pursuit for a career in maritime.

We continue to send a proportion of our cadets to SSMS as it is well established as one of the leaders in maritime education. The facilities combined with industry experience tutors makes South Shields Marine School a popular choice. The proximity of the college to the Port of Tyne makes it the perfect choice for our VTS staff and Port of Tyne pilots regularly attend the ship simulator to practice emergency situations and undertake fog runs, which is a vital part of their training. The simulator has an excellent graphic representation of the Port of Tyne approaches and the river itself and provide realistic visuals, incorporating structures, new buildings and berths that had been constructed or altered. The renewable energy and offshore industry is expanding rapidly within the North Sea. This brings new challenges to the port industry with increased vessel sizes, many of which are specialised for handling large wind farm structures. To investigate the feasibility of bringing these into and out of the port, the simulator again provides a safe environment to test the options. It also enables the port to increase weather parameters to gauge the safe operable limits.

We have sent our VTS officers to South Shields Marine School for several years, and our pilots also benefit from training on its simulators.

The training provided by the marine school’s team has always been exceptional and has consistently met all of our expectations and requirements.

We are entirely confident that the quality of delivery provided will always be to an excellent standard, as has been our experience. Value for money is also important to us, and again the marine school has fully met this criteria.
