The old, red, wooden Herd Groyne Lighthouse in South Shields, stands out against the cloudy sky, England

South Shields is a beautiful coastal town in the North East of England. It is just downstream from Newcastle, and well connected to the city by ferries and the Metro. South Shields has great places to eat, drink, and party, and has a long, proud maritime history. The area is easily accessible from both North East England and the South of Scotland. South Shields, and the marine school, are in South Tyneside.

South Shields is just a 30 minute drive from Newcastle Airport. It’s also within a few hours of Edinburgh, Manchester and Leeds.

The metro makes it easy to travel all around Newcastle and its surrounding areas, and Newcastle Central train station takes you all over the country.

South Shields is also easily accessible by road. You can take the A1018 or A194 if you’re driving, or the bus takes you into the Tyne and Wear Metro station.
