A wheelhouse simulator showing virtual screens and controls on screens

Major investment has resulted in South Shields Marine School acquiring the most advanced navigational offshore bridge simulators available today.

Compared to conventional marine and merchant navy training, simulators offer a more structured method of building high levels of competence. During simulation training, we can isolate and freeze each sub-system to understand and acquire knowledge and perform critical operations by training in situations that demand complex decision making.

The visual system integrated in our bridge simulator provides the highest fidelity, most realistic visualisation of vessels and exercise areas available in simulation training.

Simulator Facilty – then read our 20 simulated navigational bridges in the Marine Simulation Suite can meet every aspect of bridge simulator training and research requirements, offering virtually limitless training possibilities.

Our simulators include

  • Two 360″ full mission class a bridges
  • Two engine simulators
  • VTS
  • Two dedicated tug bridges with voith control
  • ASD controls
  • Bridge to Engine connection
  • DP1 can be connected to our 360″ farn bridge.

We can also perform special simulation functions such as ice navigation, anti-terror and SAR-training and configure the simulator for different areas, ships and environmental conditions. This includes but not limited to developing our own ship models and sailing alias according to client and training requirements.

“Our staff continue to lead in the development of new applications for simulator training, making extensive use of our extended engine room simulation suite and taking full advantage of the enhanced opportunities offered by both of our 360 degree bridges. I am greatly looking forward to helping shape, develop and strengthen the future of maritime training in the North East and beyond.”

“We use the marine school’s simulator for a number of activities, from Pilot training and development to trialling new types of vessels, and port development, such as new berths. We always find the staff in the marine simulator to be extremely professional and helpful, with an excellent blend of theoretical and real-world knowledge. They are very flexible to our needs and time constraints, and are always ready to listen and offer constructive and practical feedback which help us reach our objectives and achieve the best outcomes for all parties involved.”

“South Shields Marine School provides in-house training to our Mooring Masters (POACs) for our ship to ship (STS) operations offshore, via the college’s marine simulator. Participation and engagement from the marine school was exceptional, as we required bespoke simulation which covered our varying STS locations with a variety of ship modelling. The team at the Marine Simulation Centre has allowed our Sunderland office to model, trial and execute several key projects, including LNG STS operation and oil operations involving DP shuttle tankers. To the credit of the marine school, our in-house Master Mariners/Mooring Masters have described the STS modelling as the best they have witnessed over their seagoing careers.”
