A wheelhouse simulator showing virtual screens and controls on screens

SIMULATION CAPABILITIES

For over 50 years South Shields Marine School has continually invested in the most advanced training simulation systems available. By understanding the training needs of the marine shipping industry, we have expended and enhanced all our simulation systems to include fully integrated Bridge, Engine, VTS, DP, and GMDSS simulation. We have a very extensive library of existing ship models and exercise sailing areas, but our research and development team are constantly at work developing new ones for new projects and training requirements.

Our simulators range from very sophisticated Class A 360 degree visuals types to one person workstations. Therefore, we are able to provide the full range of courses, from entry level cadets to Masters, Chiefs and pilots. Any tailored training course can also be developed for a specific need.

The Marine Simulation Suite is a core part of the Marine School it uses state of the art hardware and software and is staffed by marine experts all with many years’ experience.

SIMULATOR FACILITIES

The SSMS simulation facility provides an extensive and comprehensive range of realistic training environments. The Simulation suite can meet every aspect of bridge, VTS and engine simulator training and combined with our R&D capabilities can offer virtually limitless training possibilities.

Our fully integrated Simulation suite includes:

  • Twenty-two navigation bridges, composed of two Full Mission DNV Class A 360-degree bridges, four Class B bridges and sixteen Class C bridges.
  • Any Bridges can be used as tugs with Voith and ASD controls.
  • Two Full Mission engine room spaces and four engine workstation rooms
  • Any bridge and engine room can be interconnected for full crew training.
  • Vessel Traffic Services simulation, including bridge connection for Port Integrated Training
  • A DP1 system is installed in the largest Full Mission bridge.
  • Eight debrief/Instructor rooms.
  • R&D and 3D graphics development workroom
  • Breakout and dining spaces

We can also perform special simulation functions such as ice navigation, anti-terror and SAR-training and configure the simulator for different areas, ships and environmental conditions. This includes but not limited to developing our own ship models and sailing alias according to client and training requirements.

“Our staff continue to lead in the development of new applications for simulator training, making extensive use of our extended engine room simulation suite and taking full advantage of the enhanced opportunities offered by both of our 360 degree bridges. I am greatly looking forward to helping shape, develop and strengthen the future of maritime training in the North East and beyond.”

“We use the marine school’s simulator for a number of activities, from Pilot training and development to trialling new types of vessels, and port development, such as new berths. We always find the staff in the marine simulator to be extremely professional and helpful, with an excellent blend of theoretical and real-world knowledge. They are very flexible to our needs and time constraints, and are always ready to listen and offer constructive and practical feedback which help us reach our objectives and achieve the best outcomes for all parties involved.”

“South Shields Marine School provides in-house training to our Mooring Masters (POACs) for our ship to ship (STS) operations offshore, via the college’s marine simulator. Participation and engagement from the marine school was exceptional, as we required bespoke simulation which covered our varying STS locations with a variety of ship modelling. The team at the Marine Simulation Centre has allowed our Sunderland office to model, trial and execute several key projects, including LNG STS operation and oil operations involving DP shuttle tankers. To the credit of the marine school, our in-house Master Mariners/Mooring Masters have described the STS modelling as the best they have witnessed over their seagoing careers.”
