First training provider to have MCA approval for the AEPC1
We are proud to announce the commencement of our brand-new, MCA Approved, Approved Electric Propulsion Course 1 (AEPC1).
As the first training provider to be offering this course with MCA approval, it will allow for any member of a small ship’s crew –
from Deck Officers to Technical Staff to Hotel Operations – to expand their knowledge on safe and effective operations onboard vessels utilising electric drives with battery technologies.
There are 7 outcomes in total; AEPC1 Part 1 covers outcomes 1 to 4:
The learner demonstrates basic knowledge of the use of batteries on Electric and Hybrid Propelled Vessels.
The learner demonstrates competent knowledge of the risks of dealing with battery fires and appropriate first actions in the event of a dangerous fault occurring.
The learner has an awareness of decarbonisation within the maritime industry (awareness only- no assessment).
The learner has an awareness of cyber security within the maritime industry (awareness only- no assessment).
AEPC1 Part 2 covers outcomes 5 to 7:
The learner demonstrates competent knowledge of Electric and Hybrid systems onboard vessels (Theory and Practical).
The learner demonstrates knowledge of safe electrical working practices onboard Electric and Hybrid vessels including basic maintenance (Theory and Practical).
The learner demonstrates competent knowledge of charging systems in relation to Electric/Hybrid Vessels. (Theory).
AEPC1 is continuously assessed and has a written assessment in the form of a multiple-choice exam paper to complete (pass mark 75%), and a desktop-drill scenario to undertake.
This specialist course equips learners with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and confidence required to operate safely and effectively on small vessels powered by electric drive systems and battery technologies.
As the maritime industry continues to embrace sustainable and innovative propulsion solutions, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of battery-powered vessel operations, safety procedures, system monitoring, and best practices.
Designed to support both compliance and operational excellence, the course prepares maritime professionals to work competently within modern electric-powered marine environments, enhancing both safety and efficiency onboard.

Part 1 is a two-day training course aimed at all crew onboard a vessel, and has been designed to focus on safety familiarisation and general understanding.
Part 2 is a three-day training course for learners to study Electric Propulsion from a more technical perspective, and will include further safety procedures, practical simulation and electrical workshop excerises.
Part 2 is non-compulsory for learners completing the AEPC1. Part 1 and Part 2 of AEPC1 take place during the same week, allowing for learners wanting the further technical knowledge to complete Part 1 and Part 2 of the AEPC1 within one week.
Individuals must complete Part 1 in order to attend Part 2.
