Basic Polar Code

This course is designed to give seafarers on board ships operating in polar waters, in conjunction with the guidance provided in the Polar Code, the education and training covered within the STCW requirements. The course covers those parts of the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency (KUP) as laid out in table A-V/4-1.

Operating in polar waters is different from standard seafaring. Seasonal changes in the ice, the greater risk of emergencies, and general dangers from an extreme climate mean seafarers must be fully trained and up to standard. Training for the operating in the polar climate is manditory under the IMO’s International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Learners who are undertaking this training must have a minimum of six months sea time on board any vessel operating in any waters.

ASSESSMENT

During the course, the learner will be continually assessed on a number of topic, including:

Different ice found in polar waters
Related seasonal change and where ice is found
Vessel preparedness, performance and capability in polar water regions
Emergency preparedness and response to emergencies in polar waters
Compliance with pollution prevention and how to prevent environmental hazards
International and regional regulations and codes whilst operating in polar waters

Upon successful completion of the course, all learners are issued with an STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Basic Training for Service on Ships Operating in Polar Waters.

Please note that any STCW training does not provide direct employment opportunities within the Merchant Navy sector. The training provided on this course is to supplement your existing skills and experience and hence enable you to meet the safety requirements.
