On completion of the course the learner will

  • understand the chemical and physical properties of fuels covered within the IGF Code and control measures associated with their use as a fuel
  • be able to safely manage the fuel processes and practices on vessels using fuels covered within the IGF Code
  • be able to safely manage the fuel systems in compliance with legislative requirements
  • be able to manage health, safety, emergency response and environmental precautions in working on vessels using fuels covered within the IGF Code

OVERVIEW

The overall aim is to provide seafarers with the necessary knowledge, understanding and proficiency to carry out safe and effective operation of ships powered by fuels covered within the IGF Code.

This is a five-day MCA Approved course that provides seafarers with the education and training required to carry out shipboard operations on vessels using fuels as covered within the IGF Code.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Those undertaking this course must have completed the basic training for service on ships subject to the IGF Code or hold a basic or advanced gas tanker safety Endorsement.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Before a Certificate of Proficiency can be issued the seafarer must have completed at least one month of approved seagoing service that includes a minimum of three bunkering operations onboard. Two of the three bunkering operations may be replaced by simulator training on bunkering operations.  These requirements must have been completed within the last five years.

Holders of advanced Gas Tanker Endorsement should apply directly to the MCA for an Advanced IGF Certificate of Proficiency.
