OVERVIEW

The aim of this 1 day Elementary First course course is to give all persons aiming to go to sea the basic First Aid  knowledge and immediate action to  take upon facing an accident or other medical emergencies at sea.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

No prior training required.

ASSESSMENT

During the course the learner will undertake a written exam paper and  be continually assessed on a number of topic such as:-

  • Casualty assessment and resuscitation
  • Treatment of bleeding, burns, shock
  • Rescue and transportation of casualty
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Fractures
  • Spinal injuries
  • Heart attack, choking & asthma
  • Transporting a casualty on board ship
PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Please note that any STCW training does not provide direct employment opportunities within the Merchant Navy sector.

The training provided on this course is to supplement your existing skills and experience and hence enable you to meet the safety requirements. You are advised to review the range of employment opportunities available for a match with your current skill set.

Please note: If you are not an EU passport holder, you will require a Student Visitor Visa to attend any course at Tyne Coast College.
