Merchant Navy Deck Officer Trainee Scheme
Phase 4 – Sea Service during which practical skills are acquired and MNTB training record book evidence is completed and completion of the Management Work Based Learning FDSc module – Duration – about 56 weeks.
Phase 5 – College phase. MCA oral exam preparation and mandatory short courses, including NAEST Ops, GMDSS and Medical First Aid – Duration – about 12 weeks.
Overview
Phase 1 – College phase – Covering STCW basic safety training (Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility) and delivery of FDSc Level 4 Year 1 modules in Operational Navigation, Bridge Management, Ship Operations, Navigational Aids and Naval Architecture . Duration – about 28 weeks.
Phase 2 – Sea Service during which the cadet collects evidence for their MNTB training record book and completing the Operational Work Based Learning FDSc module – Duration – about 23 weeks.
Phase 3 – College phase and FDSc Level 5 Year 2 modules will be delivered in Management of Navigation, Ship Stability, Management of Cargo Operations Marine Law & Business and Management Studies. You will also attend STCW advanced training courses in Advanced Fire Fighting and Proficiency in Survival Craft. Duration – about 27 weeks.

Further periods of sea service and study lead to the award of the MCA Chief Mate Certificate of Competency and Master Mariner Certificate of Competency qualifying the holder to serve as Master of a merchant vessel. Successful completion of the Foundation Degree in Marine Operations gives entry into a maritime BSc/BSc(Hons) programme if this option is required
All students are employed or sponsored by shipping companies and the first step is to apply to companies which are recruiting. They will support you through your training and pay you a salary or allowance during you raining period. Health: Candidates must be able to pass a medical examination (normal good health) and an eyesight test (colour and form).
