To comply with exacting safety requirements all candidates on the course will be trained in safe isolation procedures, the safe use of testing equipment and switching procedures together with the correct use of Electrical Permit to Work and Sanction to Test systems.

During the course each candidate will design and implement switching plans based upon our distribution systems and be assessed by our trained assessors in the safe working practices they will be expected to demonstrate.

OVERVIEW

The approval body for certification is the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The course is aimed at Marine Engineering officers who may be expected to supervise and/or implement on-board high voltage switching operations as an “authorising officer”. The course will also be valuable for Engineer Surveyors, Marine Superintendents, serving marine electricians and is a requirement for ETO CoC.

The 5 day High Voltage Training course meets the requirements of STCW (Manila amendments 2010) for revalidation of Second/Chief Engineer Officer CoC Reg. III/2 and III/3 (Management Level) ref MIN 423 (M) and for ETO CoC.

South Shields Marine School have fully equipped modern marine high voltage electrical facilities and equipment which are used during extensive practical exercises.

The emphasis is on the safe working practices and procedures which should be followed before, during and after any high voltage work is undertaken.

Successful candidates will be trained and able to work as “authorising officers” within a team carrying out high voltage isolation and switching operations.

    • Assist suitably qualified personnel to carry out maintenance and repair of high voltage switchgear of various types
    • Take remedial action necessary during system faults
    • Produce a switching strategy for isolating HV system components
    • Select suitable apparatus for isolation and testing HV equipment
    • Carry out a switching and isolation procedure on a marine HV system complete with safety documentation
    • Perform 5kV insulation resistance and polarisation index tests on HV equipment
PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
