MCA Engineering Officer of the Watch III/1

South Shields Marine School offers courses for marine engineers wishing to prepare for the EOOW IAMI exams. The courses  studied on campus are a blend of compulsory taught sessions and tutorials with lecturer led teaching and learner led Q+A.

Why Study at South Shields Marine School

You will be provided with the notes and knowledge to prepare you for the management level exams.

You will also have access to library books, IT services and MOODLE; our student learning platform which contains our course notes and instructional videos.

South Shield Marine School is now offering exciting and flexible new options for IAMI EK & Oral prep elements of this programme.

This will consist of the entire course that is taught at South Shields Marine School being available to attend remotely.  Our experienced lecturing staff will be using wireless microphones in class along with sharing their computer screen and PowerPoint presentations, in addition to a webcam being fixed at the white board for any handwritten notes, descriptions and diagrams our lecturers may wish to add to their sessions.

Remote students will be able to interact with the lecturer as normal and ask any questions they may have via Microsoft Teams and will receive our full support throughout the programme as they usually would on site with us at our campus.

The Online teaching will be run as pre-arranged lectures where students can use the chat function, to interact, post questions and comments. Students will be able to use Microsoft Teams to collaborate, post information or ask lecturers for assistance outside of lecture time. Have access to MOODLE our student learning platform which contains our Management Level course notes, industry guidance and instructional videos.

To understand exactly which courses you need to study on the EOOW programme you will need either an Action plan or a Letter of Assessment (LOA). Processing time for this is usually 6-8 weeks.

Experienced Seafarer rating to EOOW

Before applying for the EOOW course you will need to apply to the college for a letter of acceptance to prove your eligibility for the programme as detailed in MSN1857 (M+F).

When applying to the college you will need to send in copies of your sea service testimonials for a total of 24 months together with copy of your passport, medical certificate, watch rating certificate and all STCW certificates as listed in MSN1857.

Alternative Route for Qualified Engineers and Engineering Graduates

Before applying for the EOOW course you will need to apply to the college for a written action plan as detailed in MIN 511 (M).

When applying to the college you will need to send in copies of your award with its associated transcript.

If subjects such as thermodynamics and control cannot be identified as individual modules but are included in a module such as mechanical sciences then you should also send the syllabus or other document listing the module content. Details can be found in MIN511 linked above.

• Engineering Knowledge
• Engineering Drawing

Attendance

To complete the course, you require 80% attendance, therefore Students are expected to attend all live teaching sessions where possible. Please take this into consideration when enrolling on this course as all lessons will be run UK time and you will be expected to attend the live sessions regardless of time difference.

Please note some courses may require additional progress monitoring through assessment to count towards attendance.

On successful completion of the course you can progress to senior ranks of Second and Chief Engineering Officer will follow further training.
