The course will cover the following examinable academic subject areas:

Foundation Degree
  • Maritime Mathematics for Engineers
  • Maritime Process Control
  • Maritime Electrical and Electronic Systems
  • Maritime Naval Architecture and Ship Construction
  • Drawing (internally assessed, not part of the FD)
  • Maritime Applied Thermodynamics
  • Maritime Applied Mechanics
  • Maritime Management and Law

All units are mandatory and must be completed. Learners must complete the full 6-month programme in one block.

Management Level Engineering Knowledge
  • Engineering Knowledge General and
  • Engineering Knowledge Motor or
  • Engineering Knowledge Steam (via distance learning)*

*Steam can be offered by distance learning any time, please contact mlc@tynecoast.ac.uk for more information. Please note that the General element of the EK program will still be required to be studied also. We also offer a Motor endorsement only.

OVERVIEW

South Shields Marine School offers courses for seafaring marine engineers at Management Level III/2.

The Foundation Degree is for anyone who does not have Management Level Exemptions.

The Foundation Degree exams will be assessed internally but will align with the SQA Exam weeks; please see the exam date information further down on this page.

Please note: the Foundation Degree courses are class based only. The Management Level Engineering Knowledge can be studied class based or remote learning.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Foundation Degree
  • 12 months sea time as EOOW (III/1) or equivalent Certificate of Competency

OR

  • HNC or equivalent, this will be checked on day of induction

 

Management Level Engineering Knowledge
  • The necessary sea service to apply for a Notice of Eligibility for either Second or Chief Engineer
  • EOOW (III/1) or equivalent Certificate of Competency

OR

  • Second Engineer (III/2) or equivalent Certificate of Competency

ATTENDANCE

To complete the course, students will be required to have 80% attendance, therefore are expected to attend all teaching sessions where possible.

Payment can be made via bank transfer. If your company are paying fees/sponsoring, please specify this on your application form – we will require an email from your company to confirm this.

 

OVERSEAS APPLICANTS

If a place is available on the course you have chosen, a letter of course acceptance will be issued for those students requiring a visa.

 

APPLICATION CUT-OFF DATES

Application cut off dates are 8 weeks prior to the course commencement for those students who require a visa (please see cut off dates on previous section).

For students who have a visa / UK students, the cut-off date for applications is 2 weeks prior to the course commencement date.

Please note: the application cut-off date may be extended for the college holiday closures i.e. Christmas (please see cut off dates on previous section).

Please note: for any refund of course or exam fees, there will be an administration charge of £50 in order for us to process the refund.
