On Monday 16th March, South Shields Marine School celebrated its 165th anniversary at South Shields Town Hall, bringing together staff, students, governors and members of the council to honour its long-standing global reputation for maritime training and innovation within South Shields.
Guests were welcomed by and heard speeches from the Mayor of South Tyneside Jay Potts, Leader of the Council Tracey Dixon, and South Shields Marine School Principal Simon Ashton, speaking on the importance of the college’s vast history and future within the borough.
Founded in 1861, South Shields Marine School has played a pivotal role in shaping maritime education for more than a century and a half. Known internationally for its training excellence and technical innovation, the college continues to grow and pioneer within the maritime industry, and in September 2027 will be moving to a new town centre campus as part of a redevelopment.
A curated exhibition was on display, featuring historic artefacts, early college records, and memorabilia from South Shields Marine School’s history over the past 165 years.
The Mayor also kindly led guests on a tour of the council’s chamber, providing a behind the scenes glimpse into the workings of the council.
Simon Ashton, Principal of South Shields Marine School, said “It was an honour to be able to lead this event celebrating South Shields Marine School’s 165 years of maritime exellence. The Marine School is a matter of pride for the people of South Shields and for the town’s national and global reputation, and I am delighted to be able to celebrate our successes and future with our community and councillors.”
